ICA History

The Hair Magazine would like to share the history of the International Coiffure Association (ICA). Its roots trace back to 1912, when a group of German hairdressers formed the “Internationale Gesellschaft der Damen-Coiffeure” (IGDC). In April 1925, this German association evolved into an international organization, welcoming Swiss and English members during its inaugural World Congress in Hamburg, Germany.

Following the end of the war, the association relocated its headquarters to Paris, reflecting the city’s emergence as the post-war capital of the hairdressing world. During the first World Conference in 1925, the founders of what would become Intercoiffure Mondial adopted the pentagram—a five-pointed star—as its symbol. This iconic image embodies the core values of honesty, reason, justice, reconciliation, and diligence. The fundamental requirement for membership has always been that an Intercoiffure member must be a salon owner of high moral and ethical character.

Over time, the formal principles guiding Intercoiffure have expanded to include fraternity, friendship, fashion, and finance. These principles highlight the true benefits of membership: in addition to the prestige of belonging to the industry’s elite, members enjoy the open exchange of knowledge and experience among their peers.

In 1933, four ambitious young men in America—Adolf Beicker from Philadelphia, Carl Griesser from Baltimore, Victor Herre and Emil Ludiche from New York—pooled their resources to gain admission to the IGDC. That summer, they achieved membership and became the founding fathers of Intercoiffure America Canada.

While the battle for inclusion was won, the struggle for full acceptance persisted until 1960, when Adolf Beicker assumed the presidency following Carl Griesser’s final term. During his presidency, Beicker doubled membership from 55 to 110 in just two years, established semi-annual meetings, publicized the association’s achievements, and solidified Intercoiffure America Canada as one of the most influential sections of the global organization.

A significant milestone was reached in 2007 with the election of ICA’s first female president—Lois Christie from New York. Under her leadership, the association revitalized its events, launched the prestigious Haircolor Council and Makeup Council, and increased overall membership. In the spirit of ICA’s founders, the association continues to welcome talented and successful salon owners of high moral and ethical character, fostering the friendship, knowledge, and creativity that have defined Intercoiffure since its inception.

The Hair Magazine is excited to share a quick review of the collaborative brilliance showcased at the Intercoiffure Fall Atelier NYC.
